Pontefract Friary Excavations
Date: Wednesday 25th April 2012
At Thornhill Parish Church at 7.30PM , Simon Tomson of the Pontefract Archaeological Socciety will give a presentation on the recent excavations at the site of the Dominican Friary in Pontefract . We understand that excavations may start again soon and that volunteers may be required . A chance to find out more and put your name down !
Free admission and all are welcome .

Markenfield Hall & Studley Deer Park
Date: Tuesday 24th April 2012
Today ,we will be visiting Markenfield Hall which is a living example of a moated hall which will give us a picture of what Thornhill Hall may have looked like in the seventeenth century . Afterwards , there will be a guided tour around Studley Deer Park . Please bring suitable footwear . Unfortunately , the group numbers are limited to nine and if you would like to go , please phone Wade on 01924 462888 . We will leave in two cars from outside the Savile Arms at 8.15AM and return about 5PM .

The Battle of Wakefield

The Battle of Wakefield took place during the War of The Roses in which members of the Savile family took an active part . To reveal more about the battle and the Savile family,s involvement , Helen Cox , a medieval re-enactor - in medieval costume - will present a talk in St Michael's Church at 7.30 pm . All welcome . No charge . Refreshments available .

WORKING PARTY

We will be meeting this Saturday at 10am to spend three hours working in the park , to remove rubbish , clear pathways and water runs , and cut down unwanted vegetation . Everyone is welcome . Please bring your own shovels ,rakes , clippers etc. BUT PLEASE .... No power tools .

An Evening With the West Yorkshire Archaeological Service

The second in a series of talks from The Adult Archaeological Group. The West Yorkshire Archaeological Service are presenting the results of their recent Geophysical Survey carried out earlier this year on the Island and Listed area in Rectory Park. Come and see what they have found! They will also give an overview of the work they do and have carried out in this area. It promises to be a most educational evening and hopefully will give a great insight into the park as it was. As before the event will take place in the Parish Church and start at 7:30pm running for about an hour and a half with a Q&A session at the end. Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free to all. Refreshments will be available Please come along and support the Friends Group in their Lottery Funded Project "Thornhill Hall-Discovering The Past".----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adult Archaeological Group -Next Meeting
Date: Tuesday 14th February 2012
The next meeting of the Adult Archaeological Group will be on Tuesday 14th February 10:00am-4:00pm in the small meeting room in the Parish church as usual. We are continuing to plot the development of the park using maps dating back to the 1600's and to produce the text for the interpretation panel and leaflets. Everyone welcome, all day or just for ten minutes,drop in for as long as you can spare, refreshments are available at a nominal cost and we normally break for lunch at approximately 1:00pm.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adult Archaeology Group Meeting
Date: Tuesday 13th December 2011
The next meeting of the Adult Archaeology Group will take place on Tuesday13th December between 10:00am and 2:00pm, as before in the small meeting room at Thornhill Parish Church. Slightly shorter hours than normal due to the first meeting of the After School Archaeology Club taking place on the same afternoon and needing Kev's expert guidance.
Everyone is welcome to attend for as long as you can spare on the day. We will be adding more detail to the WYAS Document and looking at the old maps of the area. Admission is free and refreshments are available for a nominal charge.

Stargazing Advent Journey of Discovery
Date: Friday 9th December 2011
On Friday the 9th December , the Church of St Michael and all Angels in Thornhill is launching an Advent Labyrinth which is designed to mirror the journey which was made by the Wise Men on their search for the manger in Bethlehem and to prepare the journey of all christians towards Christmas in their own way. As Friends of Rectory Park we have contributed the sign to Bethlehem and we are invited to the launch which takes place from 7pm to 9pm and to share a glaas of beverage . The installation will be in the Church until 4pm on sunday 11tth .

Adult Archaeological Group Meeting
Date: Tuesday 29th November 2011
The next meeting of the Adult Archaeological Group will take place on Tuesday 29th November between 10:00am and 4:00pm in the small meeting room in the Parish Church at Thornhill (first door on the right through the gate). It is operated on a drop in basis so people can come for as long as they can spare between the opening hours. It is open to everyone and is free to attend. We are still in the early stages of the group but are formulating an action plan. We are basing our investigations on a desk based assesment carried out on the moated site by the West Yorkshire Archaeological Service. we will be looking into all aspects of this report and adding to it as we discover more. Our goal is to produce an interpretation panel fpr the Park and a set of information pamphlets Come along and see if it is for you, it is an informal atmosphere led by our community Archaeologist,Kev Cale. We normally break for lunch at 1:00 ish and tea and coffee is available at a nominal cost throughout the day. A Knight in The Church

The first of the Archaeological Adult Group series of evening talks, given by Mr Mark Griffin of Griffin Historical Ltd (our Knignt in Armour). Discussing his career as an historical re-enactor which takes him all around the world playing roles from all eras. He will also give an insight into the life of a Knight in days of yore. The event will take place in the Parish Church at Thornhill at 7:30pm on Wednesday the 23rd November. All are welcome and admission is free. Please come along and support the friends group in what promises to be an entertaining evening.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Community Archaeology Launch
Date: Sunday 25th September 2011
On Wednesday 21st Sept. a knight in shining armour will be walking around Thornhill to publicize the launch of our community archaeological project with a gala in Rectory Park on Sunday 25th Sept. from 2pm to 4pm . There will be lots of information about the project , a memory board on which to record your memories of the park , plus stalls , football , bouncy castle etc. Why not come along and learn more about what is going on in YOUR PARK and become a FRIEND OF RECTORY PARK .

2011 Annual General Meeting

We will be holding our first AGM at Thornhill Edge WMC , Albion Rd., Thornhill ( just below the post Office ) . The meeting starts at 8pm .All nominations for the positions of Chairman , Vice Chairman ,Treasurer and Secretary and any proposed resolutions should be handed in at Thornhill Edge Post Office by Wednesday 7th September

We will be having another Work Day to clean and tidy up the park , stating at 10am . All volunteers welcome . the more the merrier . Hot drinks & bacon butties available from the Pavilion , courtesy of Thornhill United Footbal Club . Please bring your own tools if you wish but no power tools .

WORKING DAY
Date: Saturday 7th May 2011
We are having a working day on Saturday 7th May from 10am to 2pm and everybody is welcome to pitch in and help . We will be cleaning up litter & broken glass , tidying up borders & pathways , rebuilding walls & clearing debris from the moat . Please bring your own rakes etc but no power tools please !
The event has the full backing of Kirklees Council who will send someone help out & arrange for the removal of the rubbish we collect .
Although we have submitted bids to Heritage Lottery Fund & Community Spaces for larger works to clear the island and build pathways , it is important that we , as a community , show that we will tackle the smaller jobs ourelves .
So please come along for some healthy exercise , good company and a chance to make your park look better .
